THORNTON RESIDENT SENTENCED FOR PRODUCTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

DENVER – Troy A. Eid, United States Attorney for the District of Colorado, and Cory Nelson, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Denver Office, announced that DAVID WAYNE CATHCART, age 51, of Thornton, Colorado, was sentenced today by US District Court Judge Lewis T. Babcock to serve 234 months (19 ½ years) in federal prison, followed by a 20 years of Supervised Release for the production of child pornography. CATHCART is in custody and remanded after sentencing.

CATHCART was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 30, 2006. He pled guilty on May 3, 2007, to the production of child pornography of a ten year old boy in his care.

According to the stipulated facts in the plea agreement, CATHCART produced in excess of 1,000 images of this child in sexually compromising position.

“Mr. Cathcart is a convicted sexual predator. He abused his position of trust to terrorize children and deprive them of their innocence,” said US Attorney Troy Eid.

“The sentence received by Cathcart today represents the dedication by the FBI along with our partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office to hold those accountable who violate positions of trust with our youth,” said FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Cory Nelson.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Habib Nasrullah. This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative.
