Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced that on April 20, 2010, a jury found Isaias Martinez, of Anchorage, Alaska, guilty of one count of drug trafficking conspiracy and one count of attempting to possess crack cocaine, heroin and MDMA (ecstacy), with the intent to distribute.

Martinez was tried before United States District Court Judge Timothy M. Burgess in Anchorage.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig M. Warner, who prosecuted the case, Martinez was the fourth and final member of the Spenard-area drug trafficking organization to be convicted in federal court. Sedric O. Williams was convicted by jury trial on March 5, 2010, of drug trafficking conspiracy and attempt to possess crack cocaine, heroin and ecstacy with intent to distribute. He will be sentenced on June 4, 2010, and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, with a maximum sentence of 40 years. Kameko Cotton pled guilty and was convicted of possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute on October 29, 2010. On February 2, 2010, he was sentenced to five years in federal prison. Clintone Walker pled guilty and was convicted on November 3, 2009, to charges of drug trafficking conspiracy and attempt to possess crack cocaine, heroin and ecstacy with intent to distribute. He was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. On March 31, 2010, Walker was also convicted of contempt of court for refusing to testify in the trial of Sedric Williams despite a grant of immunity and a court order. Walker was sentenced to an additional six months in federal prison for the contempt conviction. Every member charged in the drug trafficking conspiracy has now been convicted.

Warner, who prosecuted both the Martinez and Williams cases, stated that the evidence presented at Martinez’s trial established that Martinez was apprehended after being identified by law enforcement as one of the intended recipients of a Federal Express parcel containing 976 pills of ecstacy, 12.2 grams of crack cocaine, and 25.0 grams of heroin. The package was intercepted by a Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, and the narcotics were replaced with fake narcotics before delivery. When the package was delivered by the DEA, Clintone Walker signed for it using a false name, and later admitted receiving the package on behalf of the conspiracy. Kameko Cotton was then observed carrying the package from its original delivery address to the apartment in which Sedric Williams and Isaias Martinez were arrested. Cotton was arrested leaving the scene and crack cocaine was found on his person. Martinez and Williams were arrested in the apartment with the opened package and fake narcotics. Evidence at the scene of the delivery indicated that Martinez and Williams opened the
package and both men handled the plastic bags that had contained the drugs in the minutes following the package's arrival. A third man in the apartment, Christopher Mejia, was later convicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Judge Burgess scheduled Martinez’s sentencing for June 4, 2010, at 2:30 pm. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 40 years in prison, a fine of $2 million, or both.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, including DEA Task Force members deputized from the Anchorage Police Department and the Alaska State Troopers, conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Martinez. They were assisted by an investigator from the Palmer Police Department.
