FORMER MAYOR OF AZUSA ARRESTED ON FEDERAL INCOME TAX CHARGE

            An attorney who served as mayor of the City of Azusa from 1994 to 1997 and as a member of the City Council for four years prior to that was arrested this morning on a felony tax charge.

            Stephen J. Alexander, 49, of Azuza, was indicted on August 24 on one count of subscribing to a false tax return, a charge that carries a potential penalty of three years in federal prison. The indictment alleges that Alexander’s 1997 tax return claimed he received $14,885 in income but that his total income for that year “was substantially higher.”

            In federal court and State Bar Court proceedings, Alexander has stated under oath that he received at least $200,000 in 1997.

            Alexander is expected to make his first court appearance this afternoon in United States District Court in Los Angeles.

            An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven.

            The case was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation Division. The United States Postal Inspection Service participated in this investigation.
