JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SUES TO SHUT DOWN
St. Peters Man Allegedly Prepared Fraudulent Tax Returns After Criminal Indictment WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Justice Department announced that it filed suit today in federal court in St. Louis, Missouri, asking the court to permanently bar Anthony J. Borrelli of St. Peters, Missouri, from preparing tax returns. The government’s complaint alleges that Borrelli, who does business as Stallion Enterprises, prepares tax returns that claim fraudulent refunds based on fictitious or inflated deductions or credits. The complaint alleges that the returns prepared by Borrelli have cost the federal treasury more than $1.6 million. “People who prepare false returns or claims for refund are cheating not just the federal treasury, but all law-abiding taxpayers,” said Eileen J. O’Connor, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Tax Division. “The Justice Department is determined to put tax fraudsters out of business.” On February 2, 2004, Borrelli pled guilty to two counts of filing false and fraudulent federal tax returns. Sentencing is scheduled for April 23, 2004.
